Why Santiago from 'The Alchemist' must have left Andalusia in search of his treasure, is simply beyond me. Perhaps it has something to do with overlooking the beauty in one's own country! In fact, here it lies in the patio beyond every doorstep-exploding vibrantly from monochrome pots amid lush creepers climbing white-washed walls around a gurgling alabaster fountain. With its proximity to the Sahara bringing hot summers, the patio culture was established far back in history by the Moors, after taking over from the Romans. The practice of glamorizing courtyards to fabricate a cooling atmosphere for the inhabitants after their siesta carries on in zeal, to this day. Many even contest to win the 'patio of the year' award. But the title pales in comparison to the ostentatious displays that lure visitors from around the world. A sight to behold! With the onset of spring and the feverish rhythm of Flamenco artists filling the streets, the South of Spain is best visited from mid March-mid May.
Brief history
The old towns in the major cities of Southern Spain like Granada and Seville were historically important to Andalusia's multicultural past. The name takes its origin in Arabic-'Al Andalus' for the Moors (Ummayad Mulsims), who had a stronghold here for a long period. Later Christian rulers overpowered the region due to the internal conflicts between the Muslim kingdoms. Nonetheless, both religions have co-existed in reasonable peace, adding to the natural and architectural beauty of the region!
