THE CULINARY DELIGHTS OF BELGIUM

Updated: May 11, 2021

The avid foodie in me will forever belch polite reminders about why you should travel to Belgium. A Belgian appetite is to die for and here's something, everyone MUST TRY in the capital city of Brussels:

i. Chocolates from the Chocopolis chocolate house.

ii. Belgian Beer or Belgian Hot-chocolate (if you are a teetotaller like me).

iii. Learn the art of baking Belgian waffles in a workshop before stuffing your face with as many as you like AND

iv. Try the Belgian Fries at Fritland.

Waiting hungrily for mine in the long queue outside Fritland, isn't my favourite memory of the trip. But amid the throngs of customers and heat from the frying pans, watching a waiter cheerfully refusing to accept the obligation of three women to stick to an incorrect order, filled the heart with lessons about the humbling act of kindness!

Although holiday-calories are not to be counted, for the conscious lot, there is plenty to take in by foot in the nearby town of Brugges. A long summer evening can be easily spent here, shopping for traditional Belgian lace, strolling past the canals and finally, the Minnewater lake or the lake of love. Listening to the legendary love-tale of the maiden Minna who is said to have collapsed in the arms of her lover Stromberg after reuniting with him, on the bridge across the lake-I must say, there is no better way to go to bed than with a belly full of tasty treats, a shopping bag, and a fairy tale! Zzzzzzz :)

Brief history of Belgian Waffle making

Although traced back only to the 1300s, this art has been around since the stone-age when early men used bricks to sandwich the batter and a long wooden rod to flip the arrangement on fire for baking their crispy golden waffles. The device I must say, has evolved and how!?

The street waffles that come with a delectable selection of toppings are a delicacy from the South and are also known by the name of the town of origin (Liege waffles). But BUMMER: In general, it is believed that waffle-making did not originate in Belgium! Well we may not know where they came from, but we jolly well know where they are headed-Right into the tummy. Oh so yummy!
